The chino cloth ( CHEE -noh ) is a twill, originally made of 100% Cotton. The most common item made of it, trousers, is widely called chinos . Today is also found in cotton-synthetic blends.

Developed in the mid-19th century for British and French military uniforms, has since migrated to civilian clothing. Pants with such fabrics gained popularity in the US when the Spanish-American War veterans returned from the Philippines with their military trousers.

Etymology

Since the fabric itself is made in China, the trousers are known in Spanish as pantalones chinos (Chinese pants), which become short to simple "chino" in English.

History

First designed for use in the military and then taken by civilians, the chino fabric was originally made simple, durable and comfortable for troops to wear; the use of natural earth-tone colors also began to move toward camouflage, instead of the brightly colored tunics used before. The British and then American soldiers began to use it as a standard during the second half of the 1800s.

Pure cotton fabrics are widely used for trousers, called chino. The original Khaki (light brown) is the traditional and most popular color, but the chino is made in many shades.
