Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes is a fictional character that appears in the American comic book published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Len Wein and artist George Tuska, the character first appeared in Power Man # 18 (June 1974).

Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes first appeared in Power Man # 18 (June 1974) in a story written by Len Wein and drawn by George Tuska. Cornell Cottonmouth, or just Cottonmouth, began as a drug lord in New York City. He was involved in an event that caused Luke Cage to gain superpowers and become a "Power Man". Cottonmouth tried to recruit Cage to his organization, but was eventually knocked out and handed over to the police by Cage. During the "Shadowland" storyline, Cottonmouth returns as part of the Nightshade gang, Flashmob where they engage in conflict with Daredevil as well as the new Power Man, who, like his predecessor, dropped Cottonmouth and handed it to police.

Fictional character biography
Little is known about Cottonmouth's "Stokes" history of Cornell except that he has proven himself a drug lord in New York.When Willis Stryker wants to frame Carl Lucas, he steals the heroin delivery from the Cottonmouth organization.
After changing his name to Luke Cage, Carl decides to track down the drugs used to trap him. Cage uses a number of informants in his search. Flea's informant succeeded in his search but his investigation was discovered. Before dying of the poison dropped by him by the Cottonmouth people, Flea managed to tell Cage about his discovery. After finding out who sent Flea to infiltrate his organization, Cottonmouth got the idea of ​​recruiting Cage to his organization. He sends his peculiar snakes to Luke's office "to show him that he means business." Cottonmouth then sends his men Mike and Ike to make an offer to Luke. Luke managed to pick up the snake and beat Mike and Ike. Mike finally complained to Luke where Cottonmouth was. Luke agrees to join the Cottonmouth organization (to learn where his records are kept). Cottonmouth then began testing Cage's loyalty by sending him to steal heroin shipments from crimeboss rivals Morgan. After Cage's success, he gained the confidence of Cottonmouth and started working for him until Cottonmouth captured Cage trying to steal his records. Cottonmouth attacked Luke and assisted by his men, Slick. Cage then knocks Cottonmouth to Slick who falls into the window to his death. When Cottonmouth declared that the record should have been in Slick's mind, Luke slammed Cottonmouth onto an oak table where Cottonmouth fainted. Cage then summoned the police to take Cottonmouth.
During the "Shadowland" storyline 2010, Cottonmouth emerged as a member of the Nightshade gang called Rivals. Cottonmouth established a section of grass where he sold drugs and hired prostitutes only for him to be attacked by the Hand ninjas sent by Daredevil. However, the Power Man arrive to disperse the Hand ninja and then the Power Man broke Cottonmouth's teeth. Cottonmouth then has a broken tooth replaced with sharp gold-plated teeth. When the Power Man was apparently beaten and beaten by five corrupt police officers, Cottonmouth prepared to bite the face of the Power Man only to be usurped by Nightshade. Initially, Cottonmouth was surprised when Nightshade offered the Power Man to be his enforcer. Cottonmouth then became excited when Nightshade had set up a Power Man to fight Iron Fist. For the Nightshade surprise, Power Man succeeded in favoring Iron Fist and getting rid of Cottonmouth while Nightshade escaped.
During the 2011 "Spider-Island" storyline, Cottonmouth with Nightshade and Flashmob (composed of Chemistro, Cheshire Cat, Commanche, Dontrell "Cockroach" Hamilton, Mr. Fish, and Spear) are trying to leave the spider-infested Manhattan by crossing the bridge. only to be stopped by Misty Knight and Heroes for Hire (consisting of Black Cat, Falcon, Gargoyle, Paladin, and Silver Sable).
Cottonmouth subsequently emerged as one of the rivals in the underground battle club split by Deadpool, Gambit and Fat Cobra.
Cottonmouth was once arrested and jailed on Ryker Island, which he escaped from within the riots that occurred during the "Civil War II". With all his assets seized by the FBI or taken over by Tombstone, Cottonmouth desperately contacted Piranha Jones for help, and was convinced by Jones to take sides with him and Black Cat in the upcoming war to control Harlem. Not impressed by this duo plan, Cottonmouth left them to join New Pride Alex Wilder.

Cottonmouth has a super power that rivals Luke Cage. He also has sharp teeth that are sharpened like fangs; combined with the strength of their jaws, they are able to penetrate the "unbreakable" Cage skin. Cottonmouth also has a good knowledge of various toxins.
Other versions
Cottonmouth appeared in the series Marvel Comics 2 The Amazing Spider-Girl as head of the Bronx branch of the criminal empire of Tarantula Black. When a new criminal called Crimelord acquires and tries to sell the Kingpin file, Cottonmouth attends an auction for them in the benefit of Black Tarantula. The auction was hit by Hobgoblin and Spider-Girl leading to Cottonmouth and most of the other criminals present were arrested by the NYPD.

Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes emerged as a regular and early antagonist series in the first season of Luke Cage, portrayed by Mahershala Ali while his youthful appearance was portrayed by Elijah Boothe. His nickname "Cottonmouth" came from an incident in his childhood when some of his teeth were knocked out. He hates this nickname, snaps with anger at his simple mention, and insists on being addressed as his legal name. Cottonmouth is known to kill people with his bare hands and is capable of destroying the victim's skull while suffering no more than a few cuts on his knuckles. During his youth, Cottonmouth was part of a gang with Pop. In public, Cottonmouth is the owner of Harlem's Paradise nightclub, but is personally a principal arms dealer, working with his cousin, municipal councilor Mariah Dillard. During his time, he is assisted by Shade Diamondback's minion. Similar to Wilson Fisk, Cottonmouth also has several corrupt police officers on his payroll including Lt. Perez and his own Misty Knight, Rafael Scarfe. After Cottonmouth was arrested for killing Scarfe, his lawyer Benjamin Donovan bailed him. Cottonmouth was later killed by Mariah in the midst of a heated debate. Mariah blames the blame for his death on Luke, though at the end of the season, he then diverts his mistake to the Diamondback.
