Description
The museum was opened to the public in 1980, originally called Iron Mission State Park for the Mormon settlers' pioneering efforts to create the iron industry. The name of the museum was changed in 2009, when it grew and developed around the collection of Gronway Parry-owned vehicles and farm vehicles. Over the years other programs and activities have been added such as craft pioneer demonstrations, rotating art exhibitions, interpretive lectures, guided curation tours, and the Junior Kurator program.
The museum displays including horse-drawn vehicles used from 1850 to 1920 and a collection of pioneering artifacts. An iron industry exhibition shows the only remaining artifacts known from the original foundry - the bells of the city. Other interesting items include several historic cabins, a collection of horse farm equipment, and replicated pioneer homes.
Frontier Homestead also manages the historic ruins of Old Iron Town, an iron casting west of Cedar City that operated in the mid-19th century.

History
Iron deficiency was a major concern of pioneers who settled in Utah in 1847. When a pile of iron was found in southern Utah, Mormon leader Brigham Young asked volunteers to colonize the area. A site near Coal Creek, now Cedar City, was chosen in November 1851 for iron work. Ten months later, the colonies completed the construction of a small smelting furnace and began operating iron casting. Despite its initial successes, the 'Iron Mission' faced many difficulties. Financial problems, flooding, severe freezing and failure of the furnace took its toll. In addition, crop shortages threaten hunger. Persons persist in facing these hurdles, but the foundry finally closed in 1858.
