Table wine is a wine intended for consumption while fresh, compared to grapes grown for wine production, juice production, or to be dried into raisins.

Vitis vinifera table wine can be in the form of superior or non-seeded varieties and wide range in terms of color, size, sweetness and adaptability to local growth conditions.

Common commercially available table grape varieties such as Thompson Seedless and Flame Seedless are favored by farmers for high yield and relatively resistant to damage during delivery. Other less common varieties such as Cotton Candy, Kyoho or Pione are special hybrids grown for size, appearance and special flavor characteristics.

Market Characteristics

Chile, Peru, USA, China, Turkey, Spain, South Africa and Australia are all major manufacturers and exporters of table wines. World table wine production in 2016 estimated by the USDA to be in the region of 21.0 million metric tons per year, China alone calculates about 9.7 million metric tons of this global total. Chile remains the world's largest table-wine exporter, exporting more than 800,000 metric tons to the North American and European markets. China, on the other hand, exports only 247,000 metric tons per year mainly to the Southeast Asian market; a small percentage of total production.

Global trade in table wine has enjoyed strong growth since the 1950s. Since the turn of the century the growth of wine exports has mainly come from the southern hemisphere and developing countries such as Chile, India, Peru and Turkey.

International trade in table wine has significantly benefited from increased availability of cold storage and refrigerated container technology. Table wine is a labor-intensive farm product that requires harvest by hand at the peak of maturity. To maintain product quality at the point of sale, the grape should be sorted, packed and cooled to near 0 ° C as quickly as possible. Transport in a ventilated and temperature controlled environment requires significant investment in processing, shipping and logistics facilities. Since the grape-production cycle is relatively long compared to other fruits, with new plantations it takes 2-3 years to become productive, the production and promotion of exports is often concentrated in the hands of large vertically integrated commercial enterprises or exporter associations such as the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX).

North America and Europe

Table wines are commonly sold in the markets of North America and Europe including Sultana (Thompson Without Seed), Flame, Muscat, Almeria, Niagara and Concord.

In the United States, California remains the largest single producer of table wines with more than 85,000 hectares planted. According to USDA more than 70 varieties are grown in the state, but most shipments are limited to a dozen varieties, especially without seeds that are often sold domestically under generic green, red, or black descriptions.

Japan and East Asia

In Japan and other East Asian markets, as well as supporting the market for imported wines generally produced in Australia and Chile, domestically produced table wines are often grown and sold as premium gift products.

In Japan, Kyoho, Delaware and Pione wine rank as the first, second and third table wines are the most popular in terms of production volume. In July 2015, the new pricing arrangement for Japanese premium table wine, a Ruby Roman grape, contains 26 grapes weighing around 700 grams, sold for 1 million yen (about US $ 8400).
