The Queen Victoria wedding dress was worn by Victoria, Queen of the Kingdom of England, at her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on February 10, 1840. She chose a white dress, which was considered an unusual choice at the time of color more ordinary, made of heavy satin silk. The Honiton lace used for her wedding dress proved to be an important boost for lace making in Devon. Queen Victoria has been credited with starting a tradition of white marriage and white wedding dresses, though she is not the first kingdom to marry white.

Design

The lace was designed by William Dyce, head of the Government Design School (later known as the Royal College of Art), and mounted on a white satin dress made by Mary Bettans.

The plain cream-colored satin dress is made of woven fabric in Spitalfields, east London, and trimmed with deep folds and handmade lace trimmings at Honiton and Beer, in Devon. It shows support for the UK industry, especially the home industry for lace. The handmade lace motif is appliquÃÆ' Â d to the clean machine-made cotton. The orange flowers, a symbol of fertility, also trimmed the dress and made Victorian garlands, which she wore instead of the tiara over the veil. The hijab, which matches the fold of the dress, has a length of four meters and a width of 0.75 meters. The jewelery consisted of earrings and diamond necklaces, and a sapphire brooch given to him by Albert. The slippers he wore match the white color of the dress. Train the dress, brought by his bridesmaids, which is 18 feet (5.5 m) long.

Queen Victoria describes her choice of clothing in her journal: "I wore a white satin dress, with folds in Honiton lace, an imitation of old design My jewelry is my Turkish diamond necklace & earrings & pity Albert is gorgeous on a sapphire brooch. "

Reenactments

While photography existed in 1840, the technique has not been fully developed. A series of photographs taken by Roger Fenton on May 11, 1854 from Victoria and Albert are often depicted as wedding photos or reenactment, with dresses identified as his wedding dress. The Royal Collection has refuted this interpretation, stating that the image is the first photo showing Victoria as queen, not as a wife or mother, and that she and Albert wore court clothes.

In 1847, Victoria commissioned Franz Xaver Winterhalter to paint a portrait of herself wearing her wedding dress as a birthday present for Prince Albert. The portrait was also copied as a miniature enamel by John Haslem.

Victoria revisited the lace maker to create a baptismal dress worn by her children, including Albert Edward, Edward VII's future. This dress is used for the baptism of all subsequent Kingdom infants until James's baptism, Viscount Severn in 2008, when a replica was used for the first time. As a sign of support for the Honiton industry, besides often wearing lace on her and her children's clothing, Victoria insisted her daughter also ordered Honiton lace for their wedding dress. Victoria also wore her wedding lace in the dress she wore at the baptism of her nine children (except for Albert Edward, wearing his Garter robe). She also wore it for the marriage of her two children, her eldest daughter, Victoria, in 1858, and her younger son, Leopold, in 1882. Her youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, was allowed to wear it as part of her wedding dress. in 1885. Victoria also wore a lace at the marriage of her granddaughter George (future George V) to Mary of Teck in 1893, and to an official photo of Diamond Jubilee in 1897. When Victoria died, she was buried with her veiled wedding veil on top. her face. In 2012 it was reported that when the dress itself had been conserved and displayed at the Kensington Palace that year, the lace was now too fragile to be removed from storage.

Influence

Wearing white is quickly adopted by the rich and fashionable bride. The Godey's Lady's Book , commented about a decade after the Victorian wedding, writes: "Custom has decided, from the earliest age, that white is the most fitting color, whatever might be matter. from the purity and innocence of childhood, and the skinless skin that he now produces to the elect, "although white has become an unusual choice for wedding dresses before a Victorian wedding and is not elected by the majority of brides until several decades later.

After the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton 2011, a comparison was drawn between the bride's white wedding dress and Queen Victoria himself.
