The Longhorns made their second consecutive Cotton Bowl appearance after winning the Southwest Conference again. The Tigers are not in the Cotton Bowl since the 1947 tie. This is McClendon's first year at LSU, even though they finished third in the Southeast Conference.

Game summary
The 23-yard field session of Lynn Amedee gave the Tigers a 3-0 advantage in the first half after Texas lost their own bait that led to a 80-yard drive. This was the first field goal in the Classic since 1942. Amedee recovered Longhorn fumbling in the 37th early in the third quarter and Jimmy Field scored 5 plays later on the touchdown run. Buddy Hamic found a Longhorn player who missed to make Amedee's goal on the field 13 times later when Tiger closed the Longhorn out.
Aftermath
The Longhorns will reach the Cotton Bowl twice before the decade ends. The Tigers will go to the Cotton Bowl Classic three years later.
