Leo Gerstenzang (June 3, 1892 - October 1, 1973) was a Polish-born American who in 1923 invented cotton or Q-Tips. His product, which he named "Baby Gays", later became one of the most widely sold brands. There are many anecdotes about how Gerstenzang came to create this discovery. One is:
One day in 1923, Leo Gerstenzang found himself witnessing his wife, Ziuta, using a cotton wad for a toothpick in an effort to reach an area that was difficult to clean. Gerstenzang, inspired, soon produced one piece cotton.
Gerstenzang was born in Warsaw. He emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, in 1912. From 1918 to 1919, he returned to Europe as a representative of the Joint American Joint Distribution Committee. In 1919, he still lived in Chicago, and became a naturalized United States citizen there on September 29, 1919. In 1921, he moved to New York City.
He founded a company, named Leo Gerstenzang Infant Novelty Company, to market his new product. In 1926, he changed the name of the product from Baby Gays to Q-Tips Baby Gays, where "Q" means quality. Finally the Baby Gays section was dropped and the product was called only Q-Tips.
