Sheer fabric is a fabric made with thin yarn and/or low knitting density and that produces a semi-transparent and thin fabric. Some fabrics become transparent when wet.

The sheerness of the fabric is expressed as a numerical denier ranging from 3 (very rare, very thin, barely visible) to 15 (thin standard for stockings) up to 30 (semi opaque) to 100 (opaque). Materials that can be made translucent include fine fabrics, silk, rayon or nylon. Thin fabrics come in a variety of colors, but for curtains, white and white, such as cream, winter white, eggshells, and ivory are very popular. In some cases, thin fabrics are embellished with embroidered patterns or designs.

A common use for thin fabrics is in the curtains, which allows sunlight to pass through the day, while maintaining a level of privacy. Because the loose weave on the thin fabric curtain offers little heat insulation. However, when it is brighter in the interior than outside (as at night), then the inside of the room can be seen from the outside.

Thin fabrics are used in clothing, clothing like stockings or tights and in dancewear and underwear, and sometimes as part of clothing, as in wedding dresses and formal costumes. Thin fabrics for clothing offer very little in the way of warmth for the wearer, and for this reason it is usually used in hot weather. It offers relatively low sun protection.

Although thin stockings have been popular since the 1920s, and have been used in women's nightwear for some time, the use of thin fabrics in other clothing has become more common in recent years. There is a fashion trend that stands out among fashion since 2008, with a thin cloth used in tight clothing, lining, and with a smooth feminine draper.
