The Steel jacket (also known as "Mexican Hoodie Thread", Hoodie Steel , Sweatshirt Steel , or carpet ) is type jacket with a single large pocket on the front, and vents on the side. They are often decorated with patterns consisting of horizontal lines on the arms and hoods, and vertical stripes beneath the rest of the jacket. The fibers are often flatter and more rectangular than most shoelaces, and are always made of the same material as the rest of the jacket. Jackets are often associated with cannabis and surf culture.

They are popular in hippie subcultures and among post-hair metal fans.

They are known primarily as "steel hoodies" or "drug rugs" because of the subculture in which they are popular.

In the 1970s, California surfers brought these hooded shirts back from a surf trip to Baja California, Mexico. They become associated with surfers and surfing in the coastal cities of Mexico, and are worn as beach clothing in cold weather. The shirt, called "sudadera de jerga" in Mexico, is also traditionally worn by Mexican-American and Mexican youths, especially young men, and can be considered a part of the cholo style.

Steel jackets are made with a variety of different materials: often cotton, acrylic, and polyester. Fabrics can be made from recycled fibers, such as recycled T-shirts. The jacket tends to be somewhat watertight and quickly dries, making it more suitable for elements. Some jackets have a soft coat for extra comfort and warmth.

In recent years, they have been adapted to be hoodies with some changes like zippers in the middle. Because the striped patterns resemble Mexican serape, Baja jackets are sometimes referred to as ponchos, but both should not be confused. Ponco is a piece of cloth with a head opening and sometimes an arm opening. However, ponchos do not have arms, whereas Steel jackets do have arms.
