During the French Campaign against Korea, 1866, the Joseon Kingdom military, at the time using a matchmaker, experienced the superiority of a western rifle. As a result, Heungseon Daewongun, then acting as the leader of the Joseon Kingdom, ordered the development of bulletproof suits.
The vests were distributed to the soldiers after their creation, and were used in battles that fought on Ganghwa Island against the US Navy and Marines during the United States expedition to Korea in 1871.
The US Army captured one of the vests and took it to the US. The vest was kept at the Smithsonian Museum until 2007. The vest has been shipped back to Korea and is currently on display to the public.
