Jacket safari or bush jacket is a garment originally designed for the purpose of safari in African forests. When paired with trousers or shorts, it becomes a safari suit. The safari jacket is usually a lightweight cotton drill or a lighter poplin jacket, usually khaki in color, with its own belt, often with shoulder-style shoulder straps called a passant, with four or more expandable bellows pockets.

History

The light-colored uniforms were worn by European soldiers who served in warm climates of the 19th century and, slightly altered, during World War II. They usually feature epaulettes, pleated pouches, belts and other features later found on a safari jacket.

The earliest reference for the 'safari setting' listed in the Oxford English Dictionary was from American newspapers in 1935. In 1936, writer and adventurer Ernest Hemingway designed a 'bush jacket' made by Willis & amp; ; Geiger Outfitters. In 1939, Abercrombie & amp; Fitch advertises safari jackets, shorts and trousers, from 't-shirts' to sports and casual wear.

In the 1960s and 1970s safari clothes became fashionable thanks to the designer versions for men and women by, for example, French designers Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent, both of whom were credited with creating and popularizing the look.

Australia

The popular safari suit was associated with Australian fashion in the 1970s. It is commonly worn by former South Australian Prime Minister Don Dunstan.

On March 7, 1974, male politicians in the Northern Territory were granted permission by House Speaker Les MacFarlane to wear safari clothes during the sittings of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. It was given at the request of the Opposition Leader, Mr. Jon Isaacs. Speaker of the House said:

Dear Members, I have received further requests that the standard of menswear be relaxed to include a safari jacket. I have been in contact with the federal parliament and I find that Chairman, Sir Billy Snedden, allows a safari jacket with a shirt and tie. He also allows one member to wear a safari jacket over an open-necked shirt. Therefore, I have decided to accept a safari jacket as a suitable outfit in the Assembly. I must say that I did this very reluctantly because I felt that we had loosened our standards too far. However, precedents have been set. I might add that I will not allow a T-shirt.

Charles, Prince of Wales famously wore a safari suit on his visit to Uluru with Diana, Princess of Wales in 1983.

India

In India, the safari suits gained popularity during the 1970s influenced by major films (James Bond/Roger Moore) and some western fashion trends for a warmer climate. The safari suit in India became famous when the manufacture and supply of local synthetic fibers increased significantly in the second half of the 1970s.

Reliance Industries and other textile mills set up synthetic fiber factories in India significantly reduce the price of synthetic fibers and middle-class Indians jumping at the opportunity to dress neatly on a fabric that although not suitable for the Indian climate is quite cheap, easy to maintain and all time. The safari suit continues to be the de facto business garment, especially in the government/public sector and SMB arena in India, until the late 1990s. With India's growth during the 1990s, liberalization and with the middle class suddenly had more income to spend, younger generations began to gravitate towards more modern western trends like clothing and other business clothing. Although still visible in some parts of India, the Safari lawsuit is now indelibly associated with the so-called Indian Raj Lords - slow and inefficient bureaucracy in the 1970s and 1980s.

In popular culture

Roger Moore's James Bond wearing a cream-colored safari jacket or a bush shirt with matching pants at The Man with the Golden Gun, Moonraker and Octopussy . The safari jacket was J. R. Ewing's favorite in the 1980s soap opera Dallas where he usually wore it with ascot. Marvel Comics superhero Wonder Man wore a red safari jacket with black pants as a costume for a certain period of time. In J.G. Novel Ballard High Rise , the character Anthony Royal wore a white safari jacket.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, the safari suit is often referred to as the "Kaunda suit", as long-term Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda is known to wear it constantly.

Revival

Beginning in the mid-2010s, variants of the bush jacket, known as the shirt jacket or shacket, experienced a resurgence in England and Europe due to the popularization of vintage workwear by the hipster subculture. These are often made from blue denim, chambray, railroad, olive or khaki thick cotton, natural linen, or camouflage cloth, and outboard pockets. Some have sleeves, belts and pockets of a traditional safari jacket, while others do not.
