Men's Union Suit - Immersion Research
src: immersionresearch.com

The suit union is a type of underwear in one long piece. Created in Utica, New York, USA, it came from women's clothing during a 19th century United Nations clothing reform effort, as an alternative to curbing clothing, and soon gained popularity among men as well. The first union suit was patented in 1868 as the "union of emancipation under the flannel". Traditionally made of red flannel with long sleeves and long legs, it buttons the front and has a flap button on the back covering the butt (colloquially known as "hatch access", "drop chair", "flap fire extinguisher" "nonsense bullshit", and other names). Depending on the size, some union settings can have a dozen buttons on the front to be tied through buttonholes from the neck down to the groin area.

Clothes are still used commonly in North America into the 20th century. Due to its diminished popularity, it became primarily a men's work clothes, increasingly being replaced by two-piece trousers, also known as "long johns". It is not uncommon until the mid-20th century for rural men to wear the same union suits continuously throughout the week, or even throughout the winter. Usually, no other type of underwear is worn.

Uniform suits are still commercially available, but because of their old relationship with "old-fashioned" use, and are considered rural users "unsophisticated", they are considered funny. The rear flap is also associated with humor, and in film and television the appearance of a union suit, viewed from the rear, is a form of mild toilet humor. Adaptation of the 1999 film Wild Wild West , Back to the Future Part III , TV series Rugrats , and Family Guy episodes "No Meals on Wheels" was among those who used the back cover on union wear for a funny effect.

The union suit makes an appearance in the book Louisa May Alcott Eight Cousins, as the preferred alternative to a corset under the name 'Freedom Shirts'; and in Dashiell Hammett's Maltese Falcon, where Sam Spade's spy "wore a thin white union suit". It was also present in the 2003 film Cold Mountain. The union lawsuit was referred to several times in Laura Ingalls Wilder's books about pioneer life during the mid-19th century in the United States, and in Harper Lee's book, To Kill A Mockingbird. In the Undead Nightmare expansion for the Red Dead Redemption game, players start playing in union suits and may choose to continue wearing them throughout the game, if desired. Dave Lister, a character from the British sci-fi sci-fi Red Dwarf , can also be seen wearing one at various points throughout the series.

In England, these outfits are often known as "combinations". When made from traditional wool as recommended by Gustav JÃÆ'¤ger, this is a "wool combination" - sometimes abbreviated "com wolly". In the US West, they are known as "long grip".
