Valley Plaza Mall is a large retail shopping center in Bakersfield, California. This is the largest mall in San Joaquin Valley. The mall is owned by General Growth Properties, a real estate development of over 120 regional shopping centers across the United States. Valley Plaza Mall has 5 anchor stores and over 140 specialty stores. This mall is located near California State Route 99, the city's main north/south highway.

History
Valley Plaza Mall opened in 1967. The mall was originally developed by The Hahn Company of San Diego in partnership with John Brock Sr from the Brock Department Store. The mall initially had 900,000 square feet (84,000 m 2 ) retail space and three anchor stores: Sears, The Broadway, and Brock's. The original interior is described as "reflecting Spanish influence in Southern California on a contemporary basis".
In 1986, the mall would start growing, adding "wings" (which would increase the mall to its current size) at the eastern end in 1986, and west in 1988. Two new anchor stores would be added: JC Penney (1986) and May Co. (1988). Also Oasis Food Court will be built. In 1997, the Pacific Theater will open 15 theatrical screens on the property, but apart from the mall. It will contain a mural in the lobby featuring a newly refurbished Bakersfield Sign. This will be one of the first major public display signs since the remodel.
Anchor stores will see a lot of changes. Only Sears and J.C. Penney still exists since they were initially opened. Broadway will be purchased by Macys. Brock will be purchased by Gottschalks. It will then be closed and occupied by Forever 21. May Company be Robinsons-May, and it will also close and eventually be destroyed and replaced by Target.
This mall also has a 16 screen cinema, with IMAX. It is detached from the mall and owned by Reading Cinemas.
