This is a list of English words that are not widely used in the United States . In Canada, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and Australia, some registered English terms are used, although other uses are often preferred.
- Words with specific English English meanings that have different meanings in American language and/or additional meanings common to both languages ââ(eg pants , cot ) to be found in the Glossary have different meanings in American and English English. When words like these are used or referenced, they are marked with a [DM] flag (different meaning).
- Asteris (*) denotes words and meanings that have enough currency (ie, not occasionally) in American English, but are still important because of the relatively greater frequency in English speech and writing.
- The English English spelling is consistently used throughout the article, unless it explicitly refers to the American term.
