Plot

Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a cheerful and cheerful girl, living out of a huge trust fund from her late father, Tommy Gunn. Molly falls for singer Neal Fox (Jesse Spencer) as she plays at her birthday party thrown by her best friends, Huey (Donald Faison) and Ingrid (Marley Shelton). They have a passionate night but she leaves in the morning, saying that she can not stay in Molly's carefree life. Adding to Molly's misfortune, she knew that her father's accountant was embezzling her money, so she had no money and no homeless. She moves with her best friend Ingrid, who tells him that to stay with her, she has to find a job.

Molly started working as an eight-year-old hypochondriac nanny and a neat freak named Laraine "Ray" Schleine (Dakota Fanning) who was the daughter of Roma Schleine (Heather Locklear), a music executive who was too busy to pay attention to Ray. Ray's father was in a coma and was treated at home by a private nurse that caused Ray to paralyze his emotions to maintain order. Although he enjoys ballet, he rejects freestyle and often quotes Mikhail Baryshnikov: "Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun." Molly tried to show her how to have fun, which initially caused a lot of conflict between them, but eventually Ray opened up to let Molly in.

Molly keeps chasing Neal and holding her lucky jacket in the hope of meeting her again. After a cooking accident, Molly causes a fire that damages Neal's jacket. He redesigns to repair the damage but Neal breaks up with Molly when he sees it, claiming that he must pursue his musical career and not have time to busy. Soon after, he got a record deal with Rome and had a hit music video with a song that Molly inspired him to write, while wearing a jacket that Molly made. In disgust, Molly agrees with Ingrid's suggestion to sell hers so he can prove that he's growing up. However, after a fight, Ingrid releases Molly to live with Huey.

The friendship friendship between Molly and Ray continued to grow when Molly took Ray to Coney Island and explained that when her parents died she ran to Coney Island and got a tea cup. She encourages Ray to talk to coma father, and promises that it will help her improve. However, Ray's father died the next day, and Ray tells Roma to fire Molly. At the Rome office, Molly called Rome out because she never paid any attention to her daughter. As she leaves, Molly meets Neal, who begs to come back together because she is his inspiration. Molly refuses him and coolly tells him that he's selfish and cares only about him when he can give her something. Ray ran away from home and Rome begged Molly to find him. Molly found Ray on Coney Island, riding a teacup. At first, Ray tries to get angry at Molly for raising her hopes, but then she falls into Molly's arms, crying, finally coming to terms with her sadness.

Molly, who decides to take responsibility for her own life, accepts Ray's suggestion to auction off her father's guitar collection to an unknown buyer; this allows him to buy his own place. On waking up to Ray's dad, Molly meets another musician who asks him to design their outfits after seeing Neal's jacket in his video. She and Ingrid also make up and Molly asks Ray to apologize too. He promises to stay friends with Ray and enroll in design school after realizing his talent for fashion.

Molly arrived on Ray's recital late and was glad to see Ray wearing Molly's tutorial designed for him before. He was surprised when Ray danced freestyle for Neal to sing "Molly Smiles", a song written for him by his father when he was a child. He played using acoustic guitar Tommy Gunn, while the remaining ballerina danced with another guitar from his father's collection, revealing that he was an anonymous buyer. In a voice, Ray says that the end is a new start for all of them.
