Chinese cotton sector
China's cotton production in 2006 was linked to an area planted with nearly five and a half million hectares (5,410,000 hectares), that is eighty one million 'mous' (a 'mou' is the traditional wide unit used in rural China, one fifth of a hectare) (81,130,000 'mous'). According to official figures of China's Statistical Office, production in 2006 was 6.730 million tonnes. Of this amount, one-third of the production comes from Xinjiang province, 2.180 million tons. Based on these production figures, it is estimated that imports of 4.3 million tons of cotton will be required to meet demand, but actually between September 2006 and August 2007 (which is the annual cotton season in China) the country only needs to import 2,280,000 tons of cotton, ie 47% slightly more than expected. Two million tonnes less than expected. The actual production in Xinjiang is over 3,200,000 tons of cotton. Production in China is in the region of 7.7 million tons. They bring cotton to the machine that will deliver it and then make it into the thread they need to make cotton.
Factory production increased quite rapidly. According to the China Statistical Office, between September 2006 and August 2007 China produced 19.03 million tonnes of yarn. That was up 18.8%, but it was an 8-point increase in the same period a year earlier.
According to a study conducted by the China Cotton Association, in 2007 in China, the area of ââcotton grown was 82.6 million 'mous' (about 5 and a half million hectares), slightly increased in the previous year. Production estimates anticipate production to remain stable over the previous year, with perhaps a slight increase to reach about 7.7 million tonnes once again.
Demand in China continues to increase. Specialists estimate that textile production for 2007 will continue to grow. It is estimated that cotton yarn production will increase by 10% to approximately 21 million tons. With a cotton requirement of 12 million tons, China needs to import about 4 million tons of cotton.
