Rival Company is a small American equipment manufacturer that produces products under the Bionaire, Crock-Pot, Fasco, Patton, Pollenex, Rival, Simer, and White Mountain brands. They became a wholly owned subsidiary of Holmes Products Corp in 1999, and are now the Sunbeam Products brand, a subsidiary of Jarden Corporation, which bought Holmes in 2005. It is now part of the Newell Brands company.

History

The rival was founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1932 by Henry J. Talge as Rival Manufacturing Co., specializing in die casting. Immediately start producing food preparation products under the "O-Mat" line, such as Juice-O-Mat juice, Can-O-Mat can opener, and Broil-O-Mat broiler. After closing to produce ammunition during World War II, Rival expanded its product line in the postwar era. They acquired Waverly Products, Inc., expanding their products into the home appliance market with Waverly's popular Steam-O-Mat iron.

In 1963, the company was sold to Stern Brother Investment Bank, and went public in 1964. Soon after, they acquired Titan Manufacturing Company and their portable electric heating units. In 1970, they acquired Naxon Utilities Corp, a maker of lesser known products called the slow cooker "Bean Pot". Rivals reintroduced Bean Pot as Crock-Pot in 1971, and quickly became one of their flagship products.

The rival returned to being private in 1986, but became a public company again in 1992. After going public again, they acquired Simer Pump Company, Pollenex Corp., White Mountain Freezers, Patton Electric Company, Inc., Fasco Consumer Products, and Bionaire, Inc.. during the 1990s. In November 1996, Rival purchased the remains of Dazey Products Company and their "Seal-A-Meal" and "Food Saver" products.

In February 1999, Rival was acquired by Holmes Products Corp., a manufacturer of air handling products such as fans, heaters, humidifiers, and filters (markets where Rival is also a major player).

Holmes continued to market Rival products under the brand name "Rival Products" until acquired by Jarden Corporation in 2005. Sunbeam Products, Inc. subsidiary. Jarden continues to produce products under the brand of Rival and Holmes, although Crock-Pot is separated for its own brand and its slow cooker no longer features the Rival logo, and Bionaire and Patton have become Jarden's subsidiaries. The brand name and the "Rival" logo are also licensed by Walmart for some small appliances of their store brand.
