Profil

The Unduk Ngadau beauty show is held to commemorate the spirit of Huminodun, the mythological character of unparalleled beauty that is said to have given his life in return for an abundant harvest for his community. She is the daughter of the sacrificed Kurds, Kinorohingan and Suminundu.

The title comes from ethnic Runduk Tadau which means 'girl crowned by sunshine'. Unduk Ngadau is one of the most recognizable cultural events in Sabah and beauty contests are unique to the country. In Rungus, Runduk means "to communicate", and Tadau means "Sun". Thus, Unduh Ngadau is translated to communicate with Sundu (Kinorohingan) or God who asks for blessings from the sun.

Joanna Kitingan (UNK chairman) said, "Unduh Ngadau winners should be able to emulate high morals because they represent Kadazan, Dusun and Murut women, and we are looking for a winner who can be a role model for the younger generation and have the spirit of volunteerism willing to sacrifice their time for the people, besides being smart to bring our country, culture, and tourism to the world. Competition

Some districts have joint contests that result in more than one representative. In particular, Tuaran and Tamparuli held a contest together with the winners representing Tuaran, and the first runners-up represented Tamparuli.

Beginning in 1995, residents of Sabah who live in Peninsular Malaysia have been allowed to participate in the state contest. The first winner of Klang Valley was Daphne M. Iking in 2003. Later in the following year, Janeitha Stephen was also a representative of the Klang Valley, placed as first champion to Fharelynne Ivonne Henry in Tamparuli in 2004. Many Klang Valley representatives have their best placements in the competition: 2001 (2nd runner up), 2005 (runner up 4th), 2007 (runner-up 6th), 2008 (6th winner), 2013 (5th winner), 2014 (champion to -6), 2016 (5th winner) and 2017 (5th winner). In 2014, the Johor state of Peninsular Malaysia has been included in the list for the final competition under the conditions of representation are descendants of Sabahan KDMR.

Since 2012, the final question format becomes more interesting when final contestants have to answer two questions given in their native language and each in Bahasa Malaysia. Finally, Melinda Louis of Telupid was the first successful contestant in the final form that she had just formatted and she was crowned as Unduh Ngadau Kaamatan 2012.

State-level performances are held on May 31 each year at the Hongkod Koisaan building or known as the KDCA building in Penampang, and is the summit and end of the Kaamatan celebration for a month.

Traditional costumes

Each contestant is expected to wear their traditional ethnic costumes. However, some contestants may choose to wear costumes of their own choice which means costumes originating from specific districts. Uniquely, these traditional costumes differ between Sabah districts, designed and worn by contestant ancestors. Some of the traditional costume designs have been modernized.

In competition, the costume must be complete with its accessories, which are placed correctly. Traditional costumes are an ancestral heritage and each participant is required to maintain and uphold their cultural identity.

Note: There are more traditional costumes in Sabah.
